Enjoy Osaka’s Iconic Scenery and Food! A Dotonbori Sightseeing Guide

Ebisu Bridge is said to have been built around the same time the Dotonbori Canal was excavated.
It served as part of the approach to Imamiya Ebisu Shrine, which is said to have been founded around 600, and was long used by many people heading to places such as the puppet theater huts that once stood nearby.
Since it connects Shinsaibashi Shopping Street and Ebisubashi-suji Shopping Street, it remains busy with foot traffic to this day.
Located in the heart of Minami’s entertainment district, it is also a popular meeting spot.

Hozenji Yokocho is a pair of stone-paved alleys within the grounds of Hozenji Temple of the Jodo sect, and it has been one of Japan’s leading sightseeing spots, drawing worshippers continuously since the Meiji period (1868–1912).
The alley consists of two east-west lanes that are Approx. 80 meters long and Approx. 3 meters wide.
Although it is right next to the lively, sign-filled streets of Dotonbori, it has a calm townscape, and on rainy days the wet stone pavement creates an especially atmospheric scene.

The most famous of these is Nishi-muki Fudo Myoo, known affectionately as Mizukake Fudoson for its unusual appearance covered in green moss. It is said that the custom began after World War II, when a woman scooped up water from an offering and poured it over the statue.

This giant Ferris wheel is attached to the Dotonbori store of the large discount chain Don Quijote, located along the Dotonbori Canal, one of the liveliest parts of Osaka’s Minami area, where flashy sign-covered buildings line both banks.
Facing the canal, the Ferris wheel stands out for its distinctive shape, the world’s first oval design rather than the usual circular one. Its four-person gondolas also feature the world’s first rotating mechanism that keeps them level during the ride. One full rotation takes Approx. 15 minutes, offering views not only of the Dotonbori area but also a sweeping look over Minami from its Approx. 77-meter highest point.

An art museum that collects and exhibits ukiyo-e created in the Kamigata region.
In this four-story museum, the staircase leading to the second floor, where special exhibitions are held, features panel displays of Settsu Meisho Zue depicting Dotonbori in the Edo period, drawing visitors into the world of ukiyo-e.
After immersing yourself in the world of Kamigata ukiyo-e, do not forget to stop by the museum shop on the first floor.

A souvenir shop located on the first floor of the Nakaza Kuidaore Building, which houses various shops from the basement level up to the sixth floor.

Founded in 1945, this famous Chinese restaurant is so well known that virtually everyone in Osaka has heard of it.
The first floor sells takeout items, and its signature item is the pork bun, made with a commitment to “made fresh daily, sold fresh daily” and wrapped by hand one by one.
Inside the slightly sweet and springy dough is a filling of diced pork and onion.
The juicy pork and the sweetness of the onion spread perfectly across your palate, making it irresistibly delicious.

A specialty crab restaurant chain with 41 locations across Japan, mainly in the Kansai region.
This is its flagship location, and the moving crab sign has become one of the signature sights of Dotonbori, Osaka.
The snow crab served changes with the season, with crab from the Sea of Okhotsk available from April to September and crab from the northern Sea of Japan from October to April.
In addition, from November 6 to March 20, when crab season opens, Matsuba crab from Sanin is also offered, letting visitors enjoy different kinds of crab throughout the year.

Founded in 1979, this shop serves takoyaki, one of Osaka’s soul foods.
The takoyaki is cooked on copper plates by skilled craftsmen to make it crisp on the outside and soft and melty on the inside.
The ingredients are carefully selected too, using octopus that has grown naturally feeding on shrimp, crab, and shellfish.
The large pieces of octopus make each bite especially satisfying.

Mizuno is particular about its ingredients for okonomiyaki, sourcing them from professionals, with meat from butcher shops and fish from seafood shops, centered around Kuromon Market, known as Osaka’s kitchen. These attractive chocolate sandwich cookies are full of fruity flavor, making you feel as if you were enjoying treats at a real fruit parlor.

Known for the famous phrase “Can’t stop, won’t stop,” Kappa Ebisen is a beloved snack that has been popular since 1964.
The shrimp used in the product are a blend of several kinds of natural shrimp, including kishi shrimp, saru shrimp, red shrimp, and northern red shrimp, and they are used whole with the shell, so the snack also contains calcium.
It is also roasted rather than fried, giving it a crisp texture.

Shinsaibashi is one of Osaka Minami’s major entertainment districts, alongside Dotonbori.
It refers to three areas, Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street, Nishi-Shinsaibashi, and Higashi-Shinsaibashi. The main gateways are Shinsaibashi Station on the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line and Nagahori Tsurumi-ryokuchi Line, as well as Yotsubashi Station on the Yotsubashi Line. In the 1970s, shops converted from warehouses began drawing attention for selling imported vintage clothing, used records, and miscellaneous goods from the American West Coast, and the Nishi-Shinsaibashi area came to be known as Amerikamura.
Its symbol is Sankaku Park, located near the center of the neighborhood.
True to its name, this triangular park is a lively place for meeting up and taking a break.
Across from the park is a famous takoyaki shop, and flour-based foods have also become part of youth culture here.
The area also has many other iconic buildings, such as BIG STEP, a commercial complex with live music venues and independent movie theaters, and RIBIA, a movable street-screen display.

Kuromon Market is located in central Osaka, in one corner of Minami. It is said to date back to around 1822 and was officially recognized as a market by Osaka Prefecture in 1902.
It came to be called Kuromon Market because the temple gate of Enmyoji Temple nearby was black.
The arcade stretches for Approx. 580 meters and is lined with Approx. 150 shops. In addition to specialty shops for items such as fugu and soft-shelled turtle, there are also stores selling vegetables, fruit, meat, Japanese sweets, Western sweets, and meals, covering a wide range of categories.
The seasonal ingredients displayed at the storefronts offer a glimpse into Japan’s four seasons and food culture.
There are also plenty of foods to enjoy while walking, such as grilled seafood skewers, fresh fruit juice, and soft serve ice cream, making it fun to explore with a snack in hand.
