Kyushu offers a wide variety of attractions, including Beppu—one of Japan’s top hot spring resorts—historic Kumamoto, and Kagoshima with its stunning natural landscapes and delicious cuisine.
Connecting Osaka and Kyushu, the Sunflower ferry opens up exciting new travel possibilities. Depart in the evening and arrive at your destination the next morning. Since you can sleep during the trip, you’ll be ready to enjoy sightseeing as soon as you arrive.
This article offers a complete guide to traveling with the Sunflower ferry!

Choose Your Route Based on Destination — The Basics of the Sunflower Ferry

The Sunflower ferry connects Kansai and Kyushu with multiple routes tailored to your travel destination.
From Osaka, there are two routes: Beppu (Oita) and Shibushi (Kagoshima). From Kobe, there is a route to Oita.
Cars, motorcycles, and bicycles are welcome onboard. That means you can drive straight into Kyushu and start exploring without the need to rent a vehicle—perfect for designing your own custom trip.
In addition, the Osaka–Beppu route features newly built vessels launched in 2023, offering an even more comfortable travel experience.

Travel While You Sleep and Start Exploring in the Morning

The Sunflower departs in the evening and arrives at its destination the following morning. You’ll get a full night’s sleep while en route, allowing you to begin sightseeing the moment you arrive. Even for short trips, ferry travel lets you make the most of your time by eliminating wasted hours in transit. Departure and arrival times vary by day and season—please check the official website for the most up-to-date schedule.

Travel Freely with Two Routes — Explore Kyushu by Car

The Osaka–Beppu and Osaka–Shibushi routes make it easy to enjoy a flexible journey through Kyushu. With ports located in Beppu, Oita in the northeast, and Shibushi, Kagoshima in the southeast, you can choose different routes for your outbound and return trips, greatly expanding your travel options.
Shibushi Port is about two hours by car from Kagoshima City, 90 minutes from Miyazaki City, and just 10 minutes from Shibushi Station—making it a convenient starting point for your journey.
For example, you can take the ferry from Osaka to Beppu, travel across Kyushu, and return via Shibushi—or do the reverse. Since the ferry travels overnight, you’ll arrive in the morning refreshed and ready to explore. Traveling by car gives you the flexibility to enjoy hot springs, scenic views, and local cuisine as you please—that’s the beauty of a road trip.

Make use of both the Beppu and Shibushi routes to expand your travel options.

More Travel Freedom with the Osaka–Shibushi Route

The Osaka–Shibushi route is operated by the Sunflower Satsuma and Sunflower Kirishima. Just like the Beppu route, the ferry departs in the evening and arrives the next morning. With a sailing time of approximately 15 hours, it’s a bit longer than the Beppu route, but this allows for a more restful experience and a full recharge. During peak seasons, disembarkation may take some extra time, so it’s best to plan your schedule with a buffer.

Relaxing Cabins and Deck Time with Ocean Views

On the Shibushi route, the “Tourist” class cabins provide both affordability and a sense of privacy, making them a popular choice. The interior of the ship features a calm and subdued color scheme, creating a chic and relaxing atmosphere throughout.

Onboard facilities such as the panoramic public bath ensure a comfortable and relaxing journey.

If you’re lucky, you may even spot wild dolphins! After departure, try heading to the deck to search for them. When the weather is clear, around 7:00 a.m. before arriving in Osaka, you can also catch a glimpse of Kansai International Airport to the right, and the Expo 2025 site bathed in morning light.

The visuals change by day and season, offering something new to enjoy each time.
