At the foot of Mt. Buko, the symbol of Chichibu, between Chichibu and Yokoze sits the sprawling shibazakura (moss phlox) hills at Hitsujiyama Park. This coveted destination draws tourists to Chichibu every year in Spring between mid-April and Golden Week in May.
The shibazakura are planted in a gorgeous, carpeted spread of multicolored blooms, made especially remarkable by a display of flowery gradation. The center of the area opens to a valley and rolling hills where you can either overlook the fields from above, or enjoy a view of the landscape from below. One shot you won’t want to miss is the floor of blooms, sitting in stark contrast to Mt. Buko standing behind them. As many have begun to discover, it’s simply insta-perfect!
When the Shibazakura come into bloom that means its also time for the local market along Chichibu’s main road, a perfect stop for local food stalls and all original souvenirs. If walking from nearby stations, the easiest way to avoid hills is to walk from Yokoze station and exit towards Seibu-Chichibu on your way out. At Seibu-Chichibu Station you’ll also find a souvenir ship, a food court, and “Matsuri no Yu”, a drop-in style onsen you can visit during the day, that’s directly connected to the station. After your journey, it’s a perfect place to pick up souvenirs and take a quick soak before heading home.
