Tonkatsu Taro is the original birthplace of tarekatsudon, a signature dish from Niigata City. The standard Japanese katsudon is usually pork cutlets served over rice after being simmered in seasoned broth and egg or smothered in sauce. But in Niigata, the extra special tarekatsudon is thin pork cutlets dripping in a sweet and savory soy-sauce-based sauce and served on a bed of rice. When in Niigata, the locals know that ordering katsudon means you’re bound for this mouthwatering variety.

Tonkatsu Taro’s special katsudon is a large portion of five thinly sliced pork cutlets dipped in their secret sauce. With artful calculation, the meat is thinly breaded so as to produce a crunchy texture and maximize the flavor of the pork. Their traditional secret sauce goes incredibly well with the soft rice, making it hard to stop eating this saucey dish!
Chose from the “tokusei katsudon” which contains seven slices, the “mini katsudon” with three slices, and the “hirekatsudon” with tender and less fatty meat.
You can also choose a simple tonkatsu set or katsu curry.
