A Stunning View of Powerful Waves Crashing Against Rugged Cliffs!

Last update :

Tojinbo is a cliff formed by wave erosion. Since long ago, it has been recognized and honored as a scenic spot. These towering cliffs extend for about 1 kilometer along the coast, showcasing a dramatic display of columnar jointing—a geological feature so rare that only three such places are known in the world, including Tojinbo. It has been designated as a national Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument.

The name “Tojinbo” comes from the name of a priest who served at Heisenji Shrine. According to the story, he was pushed off the cliffs by fellow monks tired of his antics. After that, the vengeful spirit of Tojinbo is said to have gone on a rampage, making the ocean’s waves rough for 49 days, and so the cliff received his name.

Tojinbo is a famous place for suspense drama and film shootings.
Standing atop the cliffs of Tojinbo, which rise more than 20 meters high, can strike terror into the hearts of visitors, making their legs tremble with fear. However, there is also beauty: the cliff’s view of the horizon and “Kami no Shima” is breathtakingly exquisite.
Visitors can also enjoy the view from the nearby Tojinbo Tower, which is 55 meters tall, as well as from the boats that circle the strangely shaped cliff outcroppings.

I've always wanted to come here. It's famous as the dramatic cliff you always see in the final scenes of suspense dramas! The whole area is a tourist spot, so there are plenty of souvenir shops and restaurants around.

This scenic spot is famous as a filming location for suspense dramas. The sight of the rough waves of the Sea of Japan crashing against the sheer cliffs is really impressive. It's dangerous if you're not wearing comfortable sneakers or similar shoes. I recommend avoiding heels or sandals. Safety first!

  • There aren't any beautiful beaches here—it's all rocks and cliffs. This spot is part of Echizen-Kaga Quasi-National Park and is a well-known tourist attraction in Japan.

  • It didn't seem very lively. Most of the shops along the road looked closed, and knowing this is a famous suicide spot in Japan made me feel uneasy. I left after less than 10 minutes.

Is this really the legendary suicide spot? I saw tourists cliff diving here for fun—guess they're not worried about any bad luck!
