Okada Museum of Art
The museum is the largest in Hakone and displays approximately 450 pieces of art from Japan, China, and Korea.
The museum opened in 2013 in the Kowakudani hot spring area. It was built on the site of the former Kaikatei, a hotel built for Westerners in the Meiji era, and boasts a total of five floors with an area of about 5,000㎡, making it the largest museum in Hakone.
The museum features works by Rimpa school artists such as Sotatsu Tawaraya and Korin Ogata, Ukiyoe woodblock prints by Utamaro Kitagawa and Hokusai Katsushika, modern and contemporary Japanese paintings by Shunso Hishida and Taikan Yokoyama, as well as about 450 pieces of Oriental art including Japanese, Chinese and Korean ceramics and Japanese Buddhist art.
The vast garden of about 15,000 square meters is also an attraction. You can enjoy a variety of flowers such as azaleas, peonies, and hydrangeas depending on the season, so be sure to take a stroll after your visit. At the entrance of the garden, there is a quaint restaurant called “Kaika-tei”, which is a renovated building from the early Showa period. There you can enjoy tranquility while listening to the sounds of the waterfall and the pond where Koi fish swim.
There is also a footbath café on the premises that uses 100% hot spring water. Take a break with a drink in your hand while looking at the large mural painting of the wind and thunder gods "Kaze / Toki" by Kotaro Fukui.
Also be sure to check out the museum store, where you will find a variety of original items to add color to your life, such as handwriting papers, clear files, and tenugui hand towels with motifs of the art collection.
