Tenma Tenjin MAIDOYA
A souvenir store with a wide variety of Osaka's fine items (eemon in Osaka dialect) from traditional crafts to foods and confectionaries.
This souvenir store is located at 2-chome (the second block) of Tenjinbashi-suji Shopping Arcade, which is known as "the longest shopping street in Japan" with a total length of about 2.6 km from Tenjinbashisuji 1-chome to 7-chome. The noticeable outside wall is decorated with a series of lanterns representing the Tenjin Festival, which is a famous summer event in Osaka and has a history of more than 1,000 years.
The store's name comes from the Osaka dialect word "maido," which means "thank you for everything.” The store’s owner was born and raised in Tenma Tenjin, the place where her grandfather started his business in 1946. She opened this shop to let people know more about what Osaka has to offer.
All the products in the store are "Osaka's eemon (fine items)," that carry history and tell the background of its creator. These include traditional Osaka crafts that are popular among overseas tourists, such as Tenma Kiriko glasses, Osaka Tinware tumblers, and Osaka papier-mache.
There are also hand towels from Nijiyura, a store specializing in hand-dyed towels, and soaps from Kimura Soap Industry, which has been in business for 90 years. The double-sided Japanese paper (washi) masks from Izumiotsu City, a textile industry town, can be washed in a washing machine. You will want to buy these items as souvenirs or for yourself as a memory of your trip.
Of course, there is also a wide variety of food products like alcoholic beverages such as local beer, wine, and sake, as well as sweets and seasonings made with Japanese malt.
Their selected products are not only attractive to tourists but also to locals who can always find something new. Check out the interesting gift sets.
Besides the online shop, the actual stores are also located in many of Osaka's famous tourist spots, such as Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, Temma Tenjin Hanjotei, and Nakanoshima with its many older buildings. These are great places to visit to experience the lively atmosphere of the shopping district and pick up some souvenirs.
