Last update :

Mosaic tiles are small tiles with less than 50 cm² of surface area. This museum opened in 2016 in Kusahara-cho, Tajimi City, which produces the most mosaic tiles in Japan.
Terunobu Fujimori, a world-renowned architect, designed this unconventional-looking building with earthen walls standing on the mortar-shaped ground.

When you enter the museum, take the grand staircase shaped like an earthen tunnel to the top (fourth) floor. Then take your time admiring the displays as you go down.

The entire fourth floor is the main exhibition room, and the mosaic tiles selected by Terunobu Fujimori from its vast collection are displayed. The floor is filled with a variety of mosaic tile products and mosaic tile art, creating a unique atmosphere.

On the third floor, there is an exhibition room where you can learn about the manufacturing process and the history of mosaic tiles. A special exhibition is held in the museum’s gallery three times a year.

The second floor is a showroom with the latest information on tiles, and the first floor is a hands-on workshop and a museum store. At the workshop, you can try making your own small item by arranging tiles on it as you want. (reservations are required as of July 2021.)
