Mizuki Shigeru wrote one of the most famous manga comics, GeGeGe no Kitaro. His memorial museum is located in Sakaiminato City, his hometown. A 14-minute walk from JR Sakaiminato Station along "Mizuki Shigeru Road" will take you to the museum.
As soon as you enter the museum, the statues of Mizuki and his character Kitaro welcome visitors at the GeGeGe Entrance. Following the path, you will first come to the "Mizuki Shigeru Manga World" and see displays of Muziki’s life work.

Further on is the "Mizuki Gallery" which exhibits his murals and original prints (reproductions); the "Neboke Life Room" which explains about Mizuki's life; a recreation of his work studio; the "Nonnonba to Ore" which presents a collection of yokai inspired Mizuki’s creations and the spooky “Yokai Cave.” At the ”Yokai Plaza”, you can learn about yokai characters that have been handed down over time throughout Japan. You can also pass through Mizuki’s "Life Story Corridor" and learn more about him. Finally, you can visit special exhibitions of the TV Animation 'GeGeGe no Kitaro (6th season)' and the manga 'Akuma-kun'. At this museum, you can learn not only about Mizuki Shigeru's life and his passion for manga and yokai, but also gain a more general knowledge of yokai.

The museum store sells an array of Mizuki’s items, including the official guidebook of the museum and a selection of books authored by him.

  • I wasn't familiar with GeGeGe no Kitaro before, but visiting here helped me learn its background. I also found out that Shigeru Mizuki took part in the war and loved adventure, traveling to many countries to collect unique stories and customs. No wonder the Kitaro yokai stories are so vivid and fascinating!

  • The street right outside the station is filled with all kinds of yokai. Even the food and souvenirs are monster-themed. It's a super fun street to explore!

  • The museum introduces the life and achievements of the creator of yokai. If you like GeGeGe no Kitaro, you should definitely check it out.
