This national important cultural heritage is located in Higashi-Yamate, where foreigners had their residence throughout the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji period. This building is a definitive example of the origins of Western architecture in Japan. Visitors can see various original architectural styles within the premises.

In the front is the main house with a spacious veranda. It’s imposing aesthetic makes sense as it was used as a consulate during its heydays. The exterior walls are built with the “clapboard” technique. According to those in the architecture business, this is Japan’s oldest example, garnering interest. Others include a pillar with beautiful decorations. Various intricate details are scattered around, making it an interesting place to visit.
