The city of Naruto sits inside Tokushima Prefecture, one of the nation’s largest producers of lotus root, and as such is home to several different lotus fields. On this cycling tour you’ll follow a guide through an area that even the guidebooks haven’t covered for a cozy cycled across the country roads used everyday by the locals who live there. Get ready to discover gorgeous scenery like you’ve never seen.
Your tour starts by meeting at JR Ikenotani Station. Then you’ll head out to pedal around the lotus fields on your rent a cycle. Between February and May you may catch a glimpse of the storks, a nationally protected species, as they raise their young. In June the lotus leaves will spread across the waters and in July through August the lotus flowers will begin to bloom, offering up an all year-around collection of gorgeous lotuses. Enjoy a moment to take in the scenery of the lotus plants while enjoying some new trivia about nature and lotuses and told by your guide.
After pedaling through the lotuses its time to head over to a direct produce sales market for a souvenir and taste of the region’s seasonal vegetables. There’s even a dining area inside where you can try udon tapped with plenty of wakame or other bites.
Your tour will come to a close with lunch at Renmaru Café, a spot specializing in delicious dishes featuring lotus root. For an extra special touch, there’s even a real lotus paddy inside the restaurant, and plenty of deliciously seasonal, regional ingredients to enjoy.
