This shrine is located at the westernmost tip of the Shimane Peninsula in Hinomisaki, and is described as 'Misakino yashiro(Misaki Shrine)in the "Izumo no kuni fudoki". It has two main shrines: the lower shrine "Hishizuminomiya" in front, and the upper shrine "Kaminomiya" on a small hill on the right. The shrine is said to protect the night of Japan in comparison to Ise Jingu Shrine, which protects the day time of Japan.

Behind the granite torii gate, there is a vermilion-colored tower gate and a gongen-zukuri shrine pavilion. The current building was constructed under the direct control of the Shogunate by the order of Tokugawa Iemitsu. The red-lacquered shrine pavilions, detailed carvings, and magnificent wall paintings by masters of the Kano and Tosa remains. 14 buildings, including the shrine pavilions, are listed as National Important Cultural Properties of Japan.

The vermilion-lacquered shrine building stands out clearly among the blue Sea of Japan and green pine forests when viewed from Hinomisaki road leading from Inasa Beach to the Hinomisaki Lighthouse, and is often referred to as the "Dragon's Palace". Behind the shrine is Fumishima Island, a famous winter breeding ground for black-tailed gulls, where they pass winter.
