Tosa Kokubunji Temple
Temple with beautiful flowers associated with the Tosa Diary.
This temple was founded in 741 by the monk Gyoki at the behest of Emperor Shomu. Since the emperor's copy of the Konkomyo Saisho-o Sutra was kept here, the temple has been called "Konkomyo Shitenno Gokokunotera Temple" as a place of prayer for peace and tranquility, good harvests, and prosperity for all people. Later, Kobo-Daishi (the Great Monk) revived the temple as a Shingon school temple, and it became one of the 88 temples of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Even today, the sound of pilgrim bells can be heard all the time.
Ki no Tsurayuki, the author of the Tosa Diary, is said to have spent four years as a provincial governor at the temple. The temple has been preserved to this day, receiving strong faith, as well as temple territories from Lord Chosokabe during the Warring States period and Lord Yamauchi during the Edo period.
The entire temple grounds are designated as a national historic site, and the Kondo hall, bell tower, and two wooden Yakushi Nyorai statues are national important cultural properties. The temple is also famous for its seasonal flowers, which are particularly beautiful during the peony season.
