Wappa Building
A place where visitors can gather and gawk at Magewappa, a traditional woodcraft.
“Odate Magewappa” is a traditional woodcraft made using a thin sheet of Akita cedar. It is boiled in 80 degrees celsius water, softened and bent. It was popularized during the Edo Period (1603-1867) as an inside job for samurai warriors. In current times, the Magewappa is used as a bento box for other box purposes due to its natural aesthetic, lightness, and characteristic that prevents moisturizing and spoiling food.
The Wappa Building opened in 2018 with its main concept centered around the magewappa to become a place where visitors can foster Culture, Food, and Community. The “Shibata Yoshinobu Shoten” gallery and store located on the first floor is where visitors can see all kinds of different Magewappa goodies. Visitors can learn of its beauty and functionality. At the corner of the gallery is a museum of “Magewappa” equivalents found around the world. Visitors can also create their own Magewappa (Reservations required).
Nearby is a cafe serving Tiramisu in a magewappa. On the second floor is a rented office and co-working space.
