Akita Domain, The ruins of Kubota Castle of the Satake clan, was developed into a large castle site park covering an area of 16.29 hectares. The restored Omonogashira Gobansho, the restored castle's Osumi-yagura Tower, the front gate, and other features gives off the atmosphere of the feudal domain era.
The park is especially famous for the Cherry Blossom Festival, during which approximately 700 cherry trees bloom. The area is also crowded with visitors during the wisteria, azalea, lotus blossom seasons and fall foliage change.
The history of Senshu Park dates back to 1896 when it was created by Yasuhei Nagaoka, a pioneer of modern park design in Japan. It was the Chinese scholar Ryochi Kano who named the park "Senshu-en" (the predecessor of Senshu Park) after "Sen," meaning long-lasting, which was added to "Akita," meaning autumn in Akita.
The park is also home to the Satake Archives, Akita Central Library, Akita city Central Library Meitoku-Kan, and other facilities, giving the park a cultural park atmosphere. The Akita Cultural Business Facility "Matsushita," where you can meet Akita Maiko, and "Akita Inu Fureai Dokoro in Senshu Park," where you can meet Akita Dogs, are also located in the park.
