Shiroishi Castle
Book an armor experience and have your photo taken in front of the restored castle tower.
The restored wooden castle tower was completed in 1995. The original castle is said to have existed around the end of the Warring States Period, but historical records are scarce and neither the date nor the founder of the castle is known. In the Edo period, it is noted that the castle remained as a residence of the Katakura clan, the chief vassal of the Date family, until the Meiji period (1868-1912). However, after the surrender in the Boshin War, Shiroishi Castle was turned over to the new government forces and was demolished in 1874.
The castle tower, which was faithfully reproduced in the restoration, has a simple but dignified appearance. The 3rd floor on the top floor of the castle tower also serves as a watchtower, offering a panoramic view of the natural beauty of the Shiroishi cityscape.
There is an option to have your picture taken in the castle while wearing armor (reservation required), which is popular not only among Japanese tourists but also among overseas visitors. The Shiroishi Castle Historical Exploration Museum attached to the castle exhibits a 1:500 scale diorama of Shiroishi Castle and the surrounding castle town.
