The largest statue of the Kannon in Japan is located in the precincts of Daikanmitsuji Temple, and its official name is Sendai Tendou Byakue Daikannon. The statue was completed in 1991 at a cost of approximately 4 billion yen by a businessman who was developing the surrounding area. The statue stands 100 meters above the ground. The number 100 was chosen to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the city of Sendai, which became an ordinance-designated city in 1989, and to wish for prosperity in the coming 21st century.

The interior (womb) of the Kannon statue can also be viewed. The first level contains the Mizuko Kuyo-den Hall, which enshrines the Twelve Divine Generals, the 33 Kannon, and the Mizuko Kannon, while the third to 11th levels house 108 Buddhist statues. An observation window at the top of the elevator offers a panoramic view of Sendai City and the Pacific Ocean.

You can take the city bus from Sendai Station to the Sendai Daikannon-mae bus stop, but it is also recommended to get off at Nakayama 7-chome or Nakayama 8-chome on the way there. You can take pictures of the mysterious Daikannon rising above the residential area.

You can actually go inside and climb up the Kannon statue. It's located in the suburbs of Sendai, on a hill, so you can see it from the city.
I visited on New Year's Day. Even though it was the morning of January 1st, there were hardly any people, which felt a bit strange. I took the elevator to the top floor and walked down the stairs. I paid a mysterious 500 yen entrance fee. By the way, it was freezing cold inside the statue.

  • You can see the giant Kannon statue right from the hotel room window. It really feels like it's watching over the people living in the area.
