This shrine stands in Matsugasaki Park, which is located on the grounds of the former Yonezawa Castle. Flags reading "Bi" and "Ryu" flutter in front of them. A grand nagare-zukuri style shrine is located in the center of the large precinct. It was founded in 1871. Many tourists visit there because it is believed to bring good luck and make wishes come true.
Uesugi Kenshin was considered a war god. He was one of Japan's bravest warriors in Echigo (Niigata Prefecture) during the Sengoku period. After Kenshin's death, his adopted son Kagekatsu Uesugi became his successor. He served Hideyoshi Toyotomi as one of the Gotairo (Council of Five Elders) of the Toyotomi family and was based in Aizu. Later, he was defeated by the Tokugawa family in the Battle of Sekigahara and transferred to the Yonezawa Domain. Therefore, Kenshin Uesugi, the founder of the Uesugi family, is enshrined here.
There are many things to see in the precincts. There is Matsumisaki-jinja Shrine, an auxiliary shrine that enshrines Uesugi Youzan, who is famous for the saying "Anything is possible if you put your mind to it.", and Keishōden Treasure House. Keishōden possesses many cultural properties related to the Uesugi family. Kacchu (armor and helmets), swords, clothing, and ancient documents are on display.
