Tsukioka Onsen
The famous “Bijin-no-yu (hot springs for beautiful women) “ located in the deep end of Niigata.
To the east of Echigo Heiya, in the city of Shibata is Niigata’s most famous hot springs. It opened in 1915. It is a regular placeholder in “Japan’s 100 Hot Springs”. The source spring is a low alkaline water containing sulfur. It has an emerald green (sometimes milky white), which makes people think it's an artificial bath. It is called “Bijin-no-yu (hot springs for beautiful women) “, as the source spring is good for maintaining the skin, and bathers often come out with smooth skin.
The surrounding streets have a retro-aesthetic, which makes it fun to walk. The place where the spring has been found is called the “Gensen no mori (Fountainhead Shrine)”. Visitors can pour hot water on a statue to bring luck, and can even drink the source spring.
“premium SAKE KURA” has 90 different Niigata local sake brands you can taste. “premium SENBEI TA” lets you create your own rice cracker. These shops focus on Niigata’s popular foodies, so make sure to check it out.
