2km southwest from the heart of Murakami City, Senami Onsen is facing the Japan Sea with a dozen hot spring inns along the shore. It was found while test-digging for oil and the abundant sodium chloride source spring was opened in 1904. Since then, many have loved it as the hot spring with a beautiful sunset for more than 100 years. At the Funto Park where 95°C (203°F) “Heat Water” springs up, you can make boiled eggs in onsen.
Within the resort, there is a public bathhouse with hot spring as well as free foot baths. In 1937, the poet Yosano Akiko came and wrote 45 poems in her 2-day stay, praising the power of gushing hot springs.
The sunset makes a round trip between Sado and Awa Islands in one year. This imaginary path of the sunset is called Yuhi no Komichi (the Sunset Path). Lately, the shore of Senami Onsen facing the Sunset Path is being noticed as the Lovers’ Sanctuary.
