The World Heritage-listed Ainokura Village is home to this 200-year-old gassho-style lodge. The two-story structure stands approximately 11 meters tall, and the guest rooms are on the first floor, with high ceilings. 10 guests or less, or only two parties per night, so you can enjoy the beauty of traditional architecture while relaxing.
The four guest rooms are all Japanese-style, with sizes ranging from 6 to 10 tatami mats (approx. 11 to 18 square meters), and depending on the number of guests, sliding doors can be removed to combine two rooms into one large room. A large public bath is located across the street from the lodge, where you can unwind after a long day of travel. Dining in the traditional house is another highlight. Grilled char, Gokayama tofu, wild plant tempura, Japanese spikenard with sesame paste, homemade pickles, and other seasonal specialties are among Gokayama's traditional dishes. Rice made from melted snow from the mountains is also delicious.
From the second floor, guests can also see the backside of the thatched roof. The second floor was once used to manufacture saltpeter, paper, and other commodities for the Kaga Domain, and the roof is entirely constructed of natural materials.
