Chokaizan Omono-Imi Jinja
A shrine on the holy Mount Chokai that stands at the border of Yamagata and Akita.
The main shrine stands on Mt. Chokai with two sub shrines, Fukura Kuchinomiya and Warabioka Kuchinomiya at the foot of the mountain.
The holy Mt. Chokai stands 2,236m above sea level at the border of Yamagata and Akita. From the site of the mountain covered with snow on top, it is called Dewa Fuji, counted in one of 100 Greatest Mountains in Japan and Japan’s 100 Best Sceneries. The entrance to the hiking trail is on both Akita and Yamagata sides. You can choose a course from a beginner to the experienced that suits your ability (Open for hiking from May to October).
At the mountain top, there is the main hall of Chokaizan Omonoimi Shrine which was built in 564, the 25th year of Emperor Kinmei’s reign. Many hike up for a blessing from this famous Shrine and there is a simple lodging for a stay (Reservation required. Summer only).
Mt. Chokai has shorter hiking courses such as the one from the 5th to 7th station, about a 2-hour walk, for those who are not used to hiking. Many visit just to see alpine plants native to Mt. Chokai such as Chokai thistle and Chokaiensis in summer and fall colors for a pleasant walk.
