Mogami River is a prominent grade A river, counted as one of Japan’s Three Greatest Rapids. The middle area of it (From Furukuchi District in Tozawa Village to Kiyokawa District in Shonai Town) is a 15km-long scenic gorge called Mogami Gorge.
Even though driving on Route 47 along the River is quite fun, a boat ride is the best if you want to enjoy the scenery along the Mogami River. The boatman will sing his favorite sailing song and give a tour guide in a local dialect, while passing the dynamic cliffs on the right and left.
In the TV drama Oshin, the heroine leaves her parents for a job in town. The scene where she goes down the river on a raft was filmed here.
In spring, wild cherries bloom. In summer, fresh green, In fall, bright colors, and in winter, snowscape in Mogami Gorge. Two companies run the boating service on different routes. Get on the boat at the right landing for your route. Both companies offer Kotatsu (heated seating) in winter for your comfort. For tourists from other countries, language services are available (Check the website for details). If you come on public transportation, you will be using JR Rikuusai Line which runs once in 2 hours. Plan your trip carefully.
