This inn is in the Ginzan Onsen Resort in Obanazawa City, Yamagata. Wooden lodgings line both sides of Ginzan River in this Onsen resort. Notoya Ryokan is one of them, and the main building is designated as a tangible cultural property.

You can try a large bathing room, two outdoor baths, or a cave bath. The spring water with a slight sulfuric scent is effective for neuralgia, skin diseases and many more. Dinner is Japanese Kaiseki cuisine with generous local ingredients. Savor Shabu Shabu with Obanazawa Beef, Carp’s arai (semi-raw fish), etc. that you can taste only in Obanazawa.

There is a bus bound for Ginzan Onsen from Oishida Station, but there are only five times a day. You may also want to check the free shuttle bus from Oishida Station which runs twice a day (1:40 and 3:45pm). The inn has 15 guestrooms. It is best to reserve early.

Highlights

  • One of few lodgings designated as a registered tangible cultural property.
  • Kick back in the luxurious Japanese guest room.
  • You can reserve the whole cave bath for yourself.

This is a traditional Japanese inn with a strong cultural vibe. You can enjoy wonderful Japanese hospitality, kaiseki cuisine, and relaxing hot spring baths here. It's a fantastic experience.

  • Super

Notoya, the most iconic inn in Ginzan Onsen, looks pretty ordinary during the day—just like an old hotel.

I stayed here in February 2022, right in the middle of the snowy season. The whole ryokan was super quiet, with a mysterious atmosphere that made it feel like time had stopped. The rooms and the lounges on each floor had a lovely retro vibe, but the real highlight was the food—both breakfast and dinner were gorgeous, delicious, and beautifully presented. The onsen made my skin softer and smoother than any other hot spring I've visited! There aren't many rooms, so they fill up fast. I definitely recommend booking early.
