Located in Nishiizu, facing the Suruga Bay. This is an onsen village port town. It had a golden mine which had its first golden age during the Edo period, and was Japan’s second prosperous mine during the Meiji to Showa period, next to Sado. During the construction of the mine in 1611, hot springs spurted out from its main entrance. Beginning with this story, the current town is filled with Hotels and Inns alongside the coast. The 700m long sandy shores filled with pine trees is the largest in Nishiizu. Since the water depth is shallow, and waves are mild, it is also a popular swimming destination during the summer.
The average temperature is 16.2 degrees celsius throughout the year, making it a temperate climate. It is known as a beautiful town with mountains and the ocean. Many picturesque spots give visitors a look of Mt. Fuji and the ocean, but the “Suruga Bay Ferry” which connects Shimizu Port and Toi Port is a magnificent way to see it.
Other sightseeing areas include the gold mine ruins, the “Two Lover’s Point” where couples can strengthen their love by ringing the bell at the point thrice. The “Flower Clock” with a diameter of 31m in “Matsubara Park” was given a Guinness World Record for the “Clock with the world’s largest letter keys”. The “Traveler’s Point” gives visitors a panoramic view of the sunset in Nishiizu as the sun sinks below the horizon.
