Established by En no Gyoja, Omine Mountain has been revered as the birthplace of Shugendo, a form of Japanese mountain asceticism. The mountain path from Yoshino Mountain, through Omine Mountain, and on to Kumano, known as the 'Omine Okugake-do', is registered as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range'.
Situated on the slope of Omine Mountain, at an altitude of about 820 meters, is the Dorogawa Onsen, an area that's often referred to as the "Karuizawa of Kansai" due to its cool climate. Along its streets, which emit a Showa-era retro ambiance, one can find ryokans (traditional inns), guesthouses, souvenir shops, and various eateries.
One such establishment is Café Luna. Located at the heart of Dorogawa Onsen's ryokan district, this café is renowned for its coffee made with 'Gorogoro Water', a spring near the base of Omine Mountain which is listed as one of the 'Top 100 Famous Waters of Japan'.
