Former Moji Mitsui Club

Experience the bygone era with a visit to this retro-modern building.

Last update :

Built in 1921, it served as a social club for Mitsui Bussan. The building showcases the half-timbered style, a traditional European wooden architectural technique, where the wooden structure, like beams and pillars, are exposed on the exterior. This design, combined with the dark brown wooden elements emphasizing its vertical and horizontal lines against the contrast of the white window frames, characterizes its distinctive appearance. Each room is equipped with a mantelpiece. The doors, window frames, and main staircase pillars display Art Deco-inspired modern designs, evoking a nostalgic retro-modern ambiance. In 1990, it was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

On the first floor, there's a restaurant. The second floor houses the "Einstein Memorial Room," which replicates the room where Dr. Einstein and his wife stayed in 1922. Additionally, there's a commemorative room dedicated to the writer Fumiko Hayashi, who was from Moji District. A fee is required for tours of the second floor.
