The museum opened in 2012 after renovating a former commercial building. The all-glass exterior of the building, designed with white pillars reminiscent of a larch forest, was designed by architect Rikuo Nishimori.

On the first floor, where admission is free, there is a gallery, a museum store, and a book café, where visitors can casually enjoy art. The museum holds exhibitions by leading contemporary Japanese artists and their group exhibitions, as well as exhibitions by overseas artists, to meet the expectations of art fans from both Japan and abroad.

The museum also has an attached café and restaurant, where visitors can enjoy dishes using vegetables picked that day and homemade handmade pasta.

Another attraction is the chapel, "Wind-Passing Birch and Moss Forest," designed by architect Kengo Kuma and contemporary artist Jean-Michel Othniel, which is located on the museum grounds and is sometimes used as an actual wedding venue. Twice daily chapel tours (first-come, first-served; limited to 10 people) are available, and participation is recommended.
