Choshi Dentetsu Nure-Sembei (soy sauce seasoned wet rice cracker)

The miracle wet rice cracker that saved a local railroad from financial crisis!

Last update :

Choshi Dentetsu, a railway company, which runs in Choshi City, Chiba Prefecture, is a local train line with a total length of only 6.4 km. The number of passengers has been decreasing year by year due to depopulation and a decrease in the number of tourists, and the company was on the verge of closing down the line. In 1995, the company began making and selling Nure-sembei (wet rice crackers) as a sideline business to raise money for repairs to the tracks and railroad crossings. In 2006, in order to cover the cost of legal inspections of the trains that were about to expire, the company announced on the Choshi Dentetsu website, "Please buy Nure-sembei. We need to earn money for train repairs". The message spread through the Internet and other media, and orders poured in.
The Nure-sembei is still popular today as the savior that brought about the miraculous revival of the railway company.

The rice crackers are authentic, made from domestic Uruchi rice and Choshi's specialty soy sauce. In addition to the three basic types of the taste (dark, light, and sweet), the "Nure-sembei Premium," made with Hishio (ancient Japanese fermented seasoning), Katsuo (bonito), and other ingredients unique to Choshi, is also popular. The online store sells a variety of products, such as "Yakerun-desu," a rice cracker dough that allows you to try your hand at making rice crackers at home, "Mazuibo," a hit product following "Nure-sembei," and apparel with the logo of Choshi Dentetsu. When visiting Choshi, it is recommended to visit "Nure-sembei station", a souvenir store directly operated by Choshi Dentetsu, where you can try your hand at baking Nure-sembei by hand.
