Murakami Kaishindo
Enjoy the nostalgic taste of baked goods at Kyoto's oldest Western-style confectionery store.
Founded in 1907 (Meiji 40), Murakami Kaishindo stands out with its white Western-style building amidst traditional Japanese architecture. Stepping inside, you enter a Showa-modern world where Japanese and Western styles blend. The original interior is preserved, including paneled glass doors, curved display windows, high ceilings, marble pillars, and tiled floors.
The store primarily sells baked goods, known for their simple, nostalgic flavors crafted by skilled artisans. Long-selling items include 'Russia Cake', 'Madeleine' with plenty of almond powder and a gentle sweetness of honey, crispy on the outside and fluffy 'Dacquoise', and 'Galettes Bretonnes' with a rich butter flavor and a hint of salt. Particularly popular as gifts is the 'Cookie Tin', an assortment of 11 types of cookies. This popular item requires reservations.
At the back of the sales area is a café space offering limited menu items. The space is a fusion of modern Japanese and Western styles, featuring Scandinavian vintage furniture, locally crafted tableware and glasses, a tin counter, and a private room with washi paper walls. It's a must-visit café spot during your Kyoto exploration. *Closed until Autumn 2024
