Last update :

As a sacred mountain for mountain worship, it developed around "Kinpusan Mitake Zao Gongen", the predecessor of "Musashi-Mitake Shrine". Okuno-in and Mt. Otake, located behind Mt. Mitake, are said to have been training grounds where mountain priests and ascetics ran around on steep rocky terrain and ridges. The culture of Oshi (prayer masters), which has continued since the Edo period (1603-1868), still remains, and the mountain is popular for its unique atmosphere.

There are various hiking courses for beginners and advanced hikers, with a choice of courses depending on the level and time required. From Cable Car "Mitakesan" Station to "Musashi Mitake Shrine" at the top of the mountain is a 30-minute walk, making it an easy challenge even for beginners. There are many places of interest along the route, including a lodging house and store village run by "Oshi," a Shinto priest who takes care of worshippers at "Musashi Mitake Shrine," and "Shinen no Mori," a virgin forest that has been protected since ancient times as a place of no logging. If you do not use the cable car, it takes 1 hour and 30 minutes from the foot of the mountain to the summit. In addition, there is a hiking course to the rock garden along the stream and a mountain climbing course to the summit of nearby mountains such as "Hinodeyama" and "Otakesan".

Highlights

  • The summit is 929 meters above sea level and has a variety of hiking trails that are easy for even beginners to try.
  • Musashi Mitake Shrine is located at the summit of the mountain and is still visited by many worshippers.
  • The mountain paths are rugged and uneven even for beginners, so comfortable shoes are a must when visiting.
