Matsumoto is a hot spring resort in Matsumoto City, Shinshu, located roughly in the center of Nagano Prefecture. It is a hot spring that bubbles up on the eastern mountain side of Mt. Norikuradake, a famous scenic spot in Japan. Deep forests and the Yukawa Valley, a hot spring resort with abundant natural beauty, surround it.

In the Taisho era (1912-1926), it was praised by Nakazato Keizan in his long historical novel as "a magnificent view in gorgeous and brilliant multi-colored," and its name became well-known throughout Japan. Since then, it has been loved by many hot-spring- cure visitors who wish to escape the hustle and bustle, feel the change of the seasons, and enjoy the blessings of nature.

The milky white, slightly acidic water is gentle on the skin and has a silky smooth texture. It has been said that "if you bathe in this hot spring for three days, you will not catch a cold for three years."

There are many Onsen hotels in this hot spring resort. Still, there is also a public hot spring, the "Shirahone Koukyou Noten Buro Onsen (Shirahone Public Open-air Onsen)," where you can enjoy the natural beauty of the valley from the open-air baths. Note that the Shirahone Koukyou Noten Buro Onsen is closed in winter from late November to mid-April.
