The Lake Suwa Festival Lake Fireworks Festival is held at Lake Suwa, the sprawling waters that span the center of Suwa City in Nagano Prefecture. The event runs every year on August 15th since it started in 1949 for the Noryou Suwako Fireworks Festival, and will have continued the tradition 76 times as of 2024.
A full-on spectacle gradually reveals itself across the lake, with waterside star mines that burst in a semi-circle over the lake, and other dramatic displays that take full advantage of the shallow water at your feet. There’s even a launch deck set in the lake that sends a number of Wide Star Mine and other fireworks displays up at once. The resounding boom of each burst sends a shiver of awe through your body as it reverberates off the iconic mountains that surround lake Suwa. This larger-than-life event draws everyone from Suwa’s population of 50,000 to the countless visitors from outside the city each year.
Keeping in mind that this falls during the Obon holidays, the event day is known to see heavy traffic not just in the city center but the surrounding roads and highways as well. Be prepared for extra time getting to and from the event.
