I have to say, the sunset with this bridge looks just like a scene from a movie. Absolutely beautiful.

Wakato Bridge
A striking red suspension bridge spanning Dokai Bay, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
Spanning Dokai Bay, Wakato Bridge is a large suspension bridge forming part of a general roadway with a total length of about 2 kilometers, including a 627-meter suspension span. Built as Japan’s first full-scale long suspension bridge, it opened in 1962. Its iconic red structure connects the Wakamatsu and Tobata districts of Kitakyushu and has become a symbol of the area. In 2022, it was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The illuminated bridge at night is also recognized as a Japan Nightscape Heritage site.
Wakato Bridge itself is open to vehicle traffic only, but on the Tobata side, Tobata Shinsui Green Space has been developed at the foot of the bridge. Sitting on a bench and watching the bridge glow as dusk turns to night is a relaxing way to enjoy the scenery.
On the Wakamatsu side, the area around the bridge is also popular with visitors, featuring retro buildings from the Taisho era such as the Ueno Building and the Former Furukawa Mining Wakamatsu Building of Kitakyushu.
The bridge is illuminated year-round from dusk until around 10:00 p.m. Don’t miss the romantic night view that has earned its place as a Japan Nightscape Heritage site.
