A large keyhole-shaped kofun (burial mound), among the oldest in Aichi and the prefecture’s third-largest.
Shiratorizuka Kofun is one of the nationally designated historic burial mounds in the Shidami Kofun Cluster, located at the easternmost edge of Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. Built in the early 4th century using the edge of the Shonai River’s river terrace, it is one of the oldest keyhole-shaped kofun (burial mounds) in the prefecture. Measuring Approx. 115 m in length, with a rear mound diameter of Approx. 75 m and a front section length of Approx. 43 m, it is the third-largest keyhole-shaped kofun in Aichi.
Quartz was used in the stone covering on the top and slopes of the rear mound, and its white, shimmering appearance is said to be the origin of the name “Shiratorizuka” (White Bird Mound). There is also a legend that the ancient hero Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, while heading to subdue rebels at Mt. Ibuki, was nursing a snake bite on his foot when a white bird appeared. Guided to this spot, he is said to have buried the bird after it died.
The area has been developed as “Shidami Kofungun Historical Area,” with a guidance facility, the “Experience! Shidami Kofun Cluster Museum SHIDAMU.”
