Myojin Pond
A power spot within the sacred grounds of Hotaka Shrine, offering stunning scenery that is a must-see.
Nestled quietly among coniferous forests in Kamikochi, Myojin Pond consists of "First Pond" and "Second Pond." There are two routes to the ponds, one on the left bank and the other on the right bank of the Azusa River, both of which are moderate walking courses from Kappa Bridge, taking about an hour.
Reflecting its former name "Mirror Pond," the crystal-clear waters of the "First Pond" beautifully reflect the surrounding scenery. Visitors can enjoy the changing views with each season, including the sight of wild ducks and mandarin ducks swimming. The early morning, when mist is likely to form on the water surface, offers a mystically beautiful scene that is not to be missed. "Second Pond" features a small, garden-like atmosphere with rocks and dead trees, adding to its quaint charm.
The area around the pond is a sacred site for Hotaka Shrine, dedicated to the deity Hotaka Myojin, making it a popular power spot. Along the pond's shore, not only is the shrine's Okumiya (rear shrine) enshrined, but worship is also possible at the tip of a pier extending into the pond. The "Myojin Pond Boat Festival" is held annually on October 8th to give thanks for mountain safety, featuring recitations, dance dedications, and priests in Heian attire parading around the pond in boats.
