Jujutsu is a traditional Japanese martial art said to have got its start among samurai looking to defend themselves without swords or spears. Aikido evolved from jujutsu and is now cherished as a martial art embodying peace.
In Aikido, the philosophy isn't about defeating an opponent, and as such, there are no competitions or matches. Counterpoint to the ideas of winning or losing, the focus of Aikido is in refining techniques to hone the self by training the body and mind.
Aikido doesn't involve techniques for attacking; instead, it emphasizes 'circular movements'. Participants deflect incoming attacks with their own smooth, circular movements, allowing them to evade while controlling the opponent’s movements. The strategies used can be accomplished without exceptional physical strength, making this a particularly popular art among women and other patrons regardless of age or physical ability.
The Aikido course held at the Ishikawa Prefectural Budokan introduces the necessary etiquette, basic movements, and techniques, as well as demonstrations of kata (forms).
