Last update :

Located at the far end of Enoshima, discover sea caves carved by the sheer force of erosion and waves. Locals have it that the caves were a site for spiritual training by historical figures such as Kobo Daishi and Nichiren Shonin. Minamoto no Yoritomo is also believed to have prayed here before his conquest of Fujiwara no Hidehira in the Oshu region. As you cross the red-railed Iwaya Bridge leading to the cave entrance, don’t miss the stunning views of the vast ocean and Mt. Fuji looming in the distance.

Once you’ve taken in the breathtaking scenery, its time for a deep dive venture into the caves. There are two main caves: the first, with a length of about 152 meters, houses a shrine believed to be the origin of Enoshima Shrine and features various historical stone statues. This cave is also said to connect to the ice caves of Mt. Fuji. The second cave, about 56 meters long, features a dragon deity at its deepest point. During winter illumination events, the caves are beautifully lit, creating a magical atmosphere. Be sure to check the schedule for these limited-time events.
