Dragon’s Love Bell (Ryuren no Kane)
A Lovers' Sanctuary, steeped in the legend of the Celestial Maiden and the Five-Headed Dragon.
Perched on Lover’s Hill in Enoshima, Ryuren no Kane is a bell created in honor of the legend of the Celestial Maiden and the Five-Headed Dragon. Step over for a visual treat with stunning views all around that go out as far as Izu Oshima on clear days.
The legend tells of a five-headed dragon who committed their fair share of evil deeds. The same dragon then fell in love with a celestial maiden who descended from the heavens. Inspired by his love for her, the dragon and his deeds changed for good. Eventually, the celestial maiden and the dragon married, restoring peace to the land. The dragon transformed into a mountain, which is now known as Ryuko Mountain in Fujisawa City, while the celestial maiden became enshrined as Enoshima Myojin, continuing to watch over Enoshima. This legend is recorded in the 'Enoshima Engi' picture scrolls, which are carefully preserved as treasures of Enoshima Shrine.
The fence beneath Ryuren no Kane is covered with padlocks. Couples inscribe their names on these locks and attach them to the fence, believing that this will grant them eternal love. Many couples visit to leave their padlocks as a testament to their wishes.
