Naena Falls is a majestic waterfall along the Sekigawa River at the border of Niigata and Nagano Prefectures, ranked among Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. The 55-meter drop gives way to a resounding roar, earning it the nickname "Earthquake Waterfall”. The name "Naena Falls" is said to derive from the ancient Japanese word for earthquake, "na’i," reflecting the rumbling sound as water cascades down. Spring, when snowmelt increases the water flow, brings an especially impressive boost of power.
The falls shimmer in new looks each season—vibrant autumn foliage, fresh green leaves in early summer, and a cool escape during the height of summer. A well-maintained walking trail leads to a viewing platform about a 15-minute walk from the parking area. Naena Falls also marks the starting point of the Myoko Kogen Nature Trail, designated a Forest Therapy Road, making it a popular base for trekking.
Drop in at the trail entrance for a refreshing flowing somen noodles at a famous local spot, as well as soft-serve ice cream topped with seasonal fruits like blueberries and raspberries.
