Enoshima Shrine Okutsumiya
A hilltop shrine in Enoshima dedicated to the revered guardian deity of the sea.
Step out on a 10-minute walk from Nakatsumiya to find Okutsumiya, the highest point inside the Enoshima Shrine complex. Here, Tagiri-hime-no-mikoto, the eldest of the three sister deities enshrined at Enoshima Shrine, is worshiped as the peaceful protector of the sea.
Look up at the ceiling of the worship hall and marvel at the painting of the turtle drawn by Edo period painter Sakai Hoitsu and restored in 1994. Known as the "All-seeing Leer of the Turtle" this beguiling work will seem as if to see straight into you from any angle you peek. Outside at the stone torii gate is the entrance to Okutsumiya and significant piece of history that was originally donated by Minamoto no Yoritomo.
Just over by Okutsumiya and above the Iwaya Hongu, the site marked as the origins of Enoshima Benzaiten faith, you’ll find Ryugu (Palace of the Dragon God) dedicated to the dragon deity of the sea. It is believed to bring blessings for safe childbirth and fertility; even Hojo Tokimasa is said to have prayed here for the prosperity of his descendants.
