Lake Shusenko
A dam lake where you can see the magical, limited-time “submerged forest” scenery.
A dam lake that stretches along National Route 341 in Semboku City, Akita Prefecture. In the center of the lake, “Shusenko Dam Park” is maintained, and you can enjoy the beautiful contrast between the cobalt-blue, shimmering water surface and the surrounding trees. It’s also known for the limited-time scenic view called the “submerged forest,” which can only be seen from May to around mid-June.
The submerged forest is a sight created when snowmelt submerges the trees standing along the dam’s shoreline, creating a mysterious landscape that looks as if the trees are floating on the water’s surface. The reflections of the submerged forest on the water are also magical and beautiful. To enjoy the submerged forest, it’s recommended to view it from the sidewalk of “Shin-Tamagawa Bridge” spanning the upstream area of Lake Shusenko. When the lake surface gets choppy, the trees won’t reflect, so it looks especially beautiful on sunny days with little wind.
In addition, the autumn foliage season when the trees turn bright red, and the marsh-like scenery seen during low-water periods are also beautiful—no matter when you visit, you’ll be greeted with wonderful views.
