NIPPONIA Shirataka Gennai house

A luxurious kura-storehouse suite for an indulgent stay in Shirataka, a town surrounded by abundant nature.

Last update :

Located in Shirataka, Yamagata Prefecture-an area where abundant nature remains-“NIPPONIA Shirataka Gennai house” is a lodging facility that opened in 2021 after renovating Gennai house, the former residence of a prominent local landowning family that has contributed to the town’s development for generations.

On the expansive grounds, various kura storehouses of different designs are scattered around the main house. While preserving each building’s distinctive features, such as an armory storehouse and a safe storehouse, they have been fully renovated into refined spaces. All rooms come with a hinoki cypress bath, and the suites and semi-suites in particular are stand-alone rentals where you can enjoy an exceptional private stay. While gazing at the views from the windows—bamboo groves and rural rice fields—you can spend your time at ease, just the way you like.

Meals are served at “Matoi,” a dining space converted from a miso storehouse. Focusing on seasonal ingredients such as vegetables and fruit, a Yamagata-born chef serves dishes that incorporate traditional local foods passed down in the area. You can also enjoy pairings with carefully selected Japanese sake and wine. A kimono dressing experience is also popular (fee required, reservation required): choose your favorites from kimono and obi belts prepared by a long-established Yamagata kimono shop, and spend your stay dressed in kimono.
