Iwaki Yumoto Onsen Village

Said to have been founded during the Nara period (around 710-794), this renowned hot spring is counted among Japan’s Three Ancient Hot Springs, alongside Arima Onsen in Hyogo Prefecture and Dogo Onsen in Ehime Prefecture. The source springs up from about 50 meters underground and boasts one of the world’s largest output volumes-around five tons per minute. Its mineral composition, a sulfur-containing sodium chloride-sulfate spring, is rare even by national standards. The waters are affectionately known by names such as “the beauty bath,” believed to promote smooth skin, and “the heart bath,” said to be beneficial for high blood pressure, among many other reputed health benefits.

The hot spring town spreads out on the mountainside from JR Yumoto Station, with around 20 accommodation options lining the streets. Iwaki City, blessed with a mild seaside climate, is also a haven for great food. Visitors can relax and savor excellent local cuisine along with the famous hot springs, which is why many return time and again.

The area also offers plenty to enjoy on a day trip, including the free, open-access Tsuru no Ashiyu footbath and three public bathhouses. Other highlights include Onsen Shrine, a symbolic presence in the town, and attractions such as the Iwaki City Coal & Fossil Museum (Horuru), where visitors can explore the ancient world and spark their curiosity.
