Shizukuishi River Park

Delicate and vibrant, the pink tunnel of Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms is a thrilling sight.

Last update :

A well-known spot for its row of cherry trees that you can see from the windows of the JR Tazawako Line. The blossoms typically open from around mid-April to late April, and the best viewing often comes about a week later than in central Morioka. The contrast of lingering snow on Mt. Komagatake and cherry blossoms makes you feel that spring has arrived.

Around 150 Somei Yoshino cherry trees were planted about 40 years ago. They are planted in two rows along the lakeside embankment for Approx. 1.5 km, and at peak bloom their lush branches form a pink tunnel that seems to cover the sky.

For a few days during cherry blossom season, carp streamers are raised over the Shizukuishi River flowing along the park’s south side, and the area is also illuminated at night to create an even more atmospheric scene. With the gentle murmur of the river in your ears, you can take in a spectacular view that announces the arrival of spring.

After visiting “Shizukuishi River Park,” stop by other nearby cherry blossom spots such as the town-designated natural monument “Nanatsuda no Kobo-zakura,” said to be over 800 years old, and the “Single Cherry Tree at Koiwai Farm.”
