Kuranomachi Yuransen(Tochigi pleasure boat)
A leisurely river cruise where you can experience the charm of Tochigi, often called “Little Edo.”
The Uzuma River flows through the center of Tochigi City, and visitors can enjoy a scenic boat ride aboard a traditional-style vessel. The cruise covers a 300-meter round trip from Kourai Bridge to Setogawara Park and takes about 30 minutes. As the boat glides past rows of historic warehouses reminiscent of the Edo period, the nostalgic townscape and tranquil pace create an unforgettable atmosphere.
During the ride, a skilled boatman poles the vessel while sharing stories about the history of Tochigi City and the Uzuma River. With humor and flair, they bring local tales and the evolution of river transport to life, concluding the journey with a rendition of the Tochigi Riverside Boatman’s Song. It’s a rich way to experience the charm of Tochigi, often called “Little Edo.”
Seasonal events make the cruise even more special. From March to May, the Uzuma Koinobori Festival sees over 1,000 carp streamers fluttering above the river—a spectacular sight when viewed from the boat. In early August, the Kuranomachi Summer Festival transforms the riverside into a magical scene, as lanterns line the banks and their light reflects on the water’s surface.
