Ashikaga Machinaka Yugakukan

Ashikaga Machinaka Yugakukan opened in March 2003 as a facility where you can learn about and get naturally intimate with Ashikaga's history and culture. On the first floor, there are materials and exhibits related to Ashikaga's traditional textile industry, along with pamphlets, maps, and other information you need to go sightseeing.

There are also spots set up where you can relax. This is the best place to rest your tired legs after walking around town. On the second floor, you can even dress up in a kimono or in traditional armor. This is freely offered, making this a popular experience for tourists. Some of the kimonos available to be worn are also made from "Ashikaga meisen" silk fabric that is part of Ashikaga's traditional industry.
In the first half of the 20th century, this was one type of kimono with modern colors and new patterns that was mesmerizing to Japanese women back then. The price was also affordable, so these kimonos were even used by schoolgirls when commuting to school. Even today, they are popular kimonos among women who enjoy a retro modern ambiance. In addition to choosing the kimono you like from a variety of vividly colored patterns, you can also select the accessories you like including the obi sash and the sash string, so part of the appeal is having fun styling a kimono that reflects yourself. The types of fittings also include armor and kimonos for men, along with kimonos for children, so the whole family can enjoy dressing up in a kimono. Yukatas are offered during the summer.
