On summer days in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture—an area known for having Japan’s longest sunshine hours—sunflowers take over the landscape. In season, Approx. 400,000 sunflowers bloom at once, creating a breathtaking view. Behind them, mountains with beautiful ridgelines—including the Southern Alps, Yatsugatake, and even Mt. Fuji—line the horizon, making the scenery even more spectacular. Easy to visit as a day trip from the Tokyo area, this is one of the top sunflower spots in Yamanashi and the Kanto region, drawing large crowds during the season.

Because different sections bloom at different times, the fields are enjoyable no matter when you visit during the season. Mornings are still cool and the air is especially clear, so coming early is a great option. Soak up the view of endless sunflowers, with sweeping mountain scenery beyond them, as you feel the refreshing breeze of the highlands.

Each year, the “Hokuto City Akeno Sunflower Festival” is held for Approx. one month from late July to late August. Along with the famous sunflower soft-serve ice cream, there are local sweets and regional specialties to try, plus original goods to browse.
