Established in 1936, the Kushiro City Museum offers an opportunity to learn about the rich nature and history of the Kushiro area. The current museum building, which opened in 1983, sits atop a hill overlooking Lake Harutori, a nationally designated Natural Monument. The building’s striking design, with its elongated, tiered structure, is inspired by the image of a red-crowned crane, Hokkaido’s iconic bird, in flight.

Upon entering the museum, visitors are greeted by a replica skeleton of a mammoth, measuring 3.5 meters in length, 2.9 meters in height, and with tusks extending 2.5 meters. The sheer scale of this exhibit is sure to captivate visitors. The museum also showcases numerous specimens and displays, including taxidermy of brown bears, red-crowned cranes, and Ezo deer, providing insights into the unique nature and wildlife of the Kushiro region.

In addition to its natural exhibits, the museum offers comprehensive displays on the history and industries of Kushiro, from the Jomon period to the modern era, as well as on the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido. Visitors can explore traditional tools, garments, and everyday items, offering a glimpse into the life and culture of the past.

A visit to the museum promises to deepen your understanding of Kushiro, adding a layer of richness to your travel experience in the region.
