Takayu Onsen
A hidden hot spring in Fukushima with over 400 years of history, where visitors can enjoy natural, free-flowing hot spring water straight from the source.
Located halfway up the slopes of the Azuma Mountains, this hot spring town boasts approximately 400 years of history since its discovery. Alongside Zao and Shirabu, it is known as one of the "Three High Hot Springs of Oshu" and is popular for its prime location near the entrance of the Bandai-Azuma Skyline, a scenic tourist route.
Historically, the area around Takayu Onsen flourished as a therapeutic hot spring resort. Its sulfur-rich water, one of the most concentrated in Japan, is characterized by a distinctive scent and a milky-white color. This "beauty-enhancing" onsen is reputed to improve the skin's moisture and repair functions. The six inns and one public bath in the town maintain the natural quality of the onsen with no added water or heating, ensuring pure, free-flowing hot spring water. Each inn and public bath draws water from different sources, creating variations in temperature and mineral content, which brings many repeat visitors eager to explore these subtle differences.
The rich natural surroundings are another highlight, offering stunning seasonal views of the Azuma Mountains from outdoor baths, guest rooms, or even from a car along the Bandai-Azuma Skyline. The 30-meter Fudo Waterfall, accessible via hiking trails from the hot spring town, is also a must-see for nature lovers.
Note: As of July 2024, the Fudo Waterfall trail is temporarily closed to the public.
